In an effort to make Milwaukee County’s roads safer, local authorities have introduced the Motor Vehicle Collision Dashboard, a comprehensive tool that tracks and analyzes traffic incidents countywide. This detailed analysis of Milwaukee car accidents is helping policymakers and community leaders make better decisions about where to focus safety improvements. Furthermore, the county is fostering transparency and encouraging community involvement in road safety initiatives by making this data accessible to the public.
History of the Milwaukee County Motor Vehicle Collision Dashboard
Milwaukee County launched the Motor Vehicle Collision Dashboard in March 2024 to track and visualize traffic crashes across the region. A project of the Milwaukee Area Safe Streets Task Force, the dashboard supports safer road planning by identifying where crashes are happening and what kinds of incidents are most common.
In early 2025, the county released Phase 2 of the dashboard, adding new features based on community feedback and officials’ data analysis needs. The updated version now includes a “hotspots” tab highlighting crash-dense areas using four-month data sets. The improved dashboard also allows users to filter crash data by type, such as pedestrian or bicycle collisions, and view demographic and geographic trends. These improvements aim to give officials a clearer picture of roadway risks and guide safety investments more effectively.
Early Findings
Since launching the dashboard, Milwaukee County officials have identified troubling patterns in collisions across the county. One key early finding is the concentration of crashes in specific areas, particularly where streets are wider and drivers tend to speed. The dashboard’s “Hotspots” feature has helped pinpoint these danger zones, giving officials the data they need to prioritize road safety improvements.
These insights are already influencing safety planning. “The data tells us that while overall crashes in Milwaukee County have declined 14 percent since 2019, fatal injuries have actually increased by 34 percent,” said Milwaukee County Chief Health Policy Advisor Dr. Ben Weston. “This means the crashes that do occur are more severe, more deadly, and more devastating to families and communities.”
Tips for Staying Safe on Milwaukee County Roads
While more information on crash hotspots is helpful, the actions of individual drivers are the primary factor in preventing collisions. Here are a few tips to keep yourself and others safe while driving in Milwaukee County:
- Always obey the speed limit, especially on wider roads where speeding is common
- Avoid distractions like texting while driving or talking on the phone
- Watch for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly at intersections and crosswalks
- Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Leave extra space between your car and the one in front of you
- Slow down in poor weather or low-visibility conditions
